God of War Story
Every New Beginning Comes From Some Other Beginning's End
The game starts at a snowy Nordic land. After burning the body of his wife Faye, Kratos teaches his son Atreus little hunting before they start an adventure.
Soon when they go back to home they confrınt a stranger with godlike power and immunity. Kratos wins the fight and think that the stranger is dead. After that Atreus and Kratos begin their journey to fulfill Faye’s dying wish which is to scatter her ashes on the highest peak in the nine realms.
Reaching the Lake of Nine, the duo encounter the last remaining Giant, the friendly Earth Serpent Jörmungandr and after meeting it they continue their journey but they see their path blocked by an impenetrable black mist. Realizing they can't get through the fog, they go back and hunt a pig in the forest where they meet the Witch of the Forest.
The witch tells them to use Bifröst to travel to Alfheim and secure her Light to extinguish the fog. They successfully reach the summit of Midgard and overhear a conversation between the mysterious stranger - revealed to be Baldur - and his nephews Magni and Modi, and the imprisoned Mímir.
Mimir the Game Changer
After leaving, Kratos and Atreus confront Mímir, who reveals that the highest peak is in Jötunheim. The giants prevented travel there to keep Odin and Thor out. Aware of another passage, Mímir tells Kratos to cut his head off of him and take his head to Freya (the witch) to resurrect his head.
At first Kratos didn’t want to trust him because of his past Atreus convinced him to trust. Looking for the components to open Jötunheim's portal, Kratos and Atreus are attacked by and Magni and Modi.
After Kratos kills Magni, Modi escapes but later ambushes the trio. Kratos fends off him, but Atreus suddenly falls ill due to the contradiction of a god who sees himself as mortal. Freya offers to help Atreus and instructs Kratos to take the heart of a certain troll in Helheim; however, the frost-based Leviathan Axe is useless in the icy realm.
Kratos returns home to reveal his ancient weapons, the fiery Blades of Chaos, and is haunted by the spirit of Athena. After taking the heart, he has a haunting vision of Zeus and Mímir pieced together Kratos' bloody past. Freya resurrects Atreus and Kratos tells him they are gods. Atreus becomes increasingly arrogant and, against Kratos' orders, kills a weakened Modi who was beaten by his father Thor for leaving his brother Magni to die. At the peak of Midgard, Kratos and Atreus are ambushed by Baldur, causing Jötunheim's portal to be destroyed and the group to fall into Helheim.Atreus reconciles with Kratos, and they learn of Freya and Baldur's familial relationship and the immortality spell he cast on her. Returning to Midgard, Mímir realizes there is another way to reach Jötunheim, but he needs his lost eye.
The Cycle Must End
After taking it from the belly of Jörmungandr, who accidentally ate it along with a Thor statue, they are attacked by Baldur again, but Freya intervenes. During the fight, Baldur is pierced by Atreus' mistletoe arrow and breaks Freya's spell.
Baldur is eventually defeated; Despite being given the opportunity to retreat, he attempts to strangle Freya, forcing Kratos to kill him.A grieving Freya vows revenge and taunts Kratos for hiding his true nature. Kratos eventually tells Atreus about his own past and how he killed Greek gods, including his father, Zeus.
Atreus laments this cycle of violence, and Kratos tells him they should learn from their experiences and not repeat the mistakes of their predecessors. A quiet Freya leaves with Baldur's corpse, and Mímir hopes he'll finally get on his way and realize that Kratos did the right thing.
In Jötunheim they find a temple with a mural depicting their adventures, showing the Giants vaguely foretelling the future. Additionally, they discover that Faye is a Giant who has decided to stay in Midgard, which means Atreus is half Giant, one quarter god, and one quarter mortal. His fights with Baldur are shown, which reveals that he has been after Faye the entire time but was unaware that she had passed away. It is also revealed that Atreus was named Loki by his mother. Kratos and Atreus then fulfill their promise and scatter their ashes on the summit overlooking the Giant corpse valley.
Later on, Kratos explains that the name given to Atreus is the name of a compassionate Spartan companion. Returning to Midgard, Mímir warns them that the three-year Fimbulwinter has begun, meaning that Ragnarök will soon follow - which was supposed to take another hundred years. At the secret end of the game, Kratos, Atreus and Mímir return home and sleep. Atreus has a vision that Thor will come to the end of Fimbulwinter to confront them.
